SC DISCUS in the Elementary Classroom & Library
SC DISCUS is a great tool for teachers and students alike. As a
4th grade classroom teacher, I used DISCUS on a daily basis.
My district uses
the Daily 5 literacy framework, which
helps develop independent, motivated, engaged readers through mini-lessons and 20-minute
work sessions. Students work to build at least 20 minutes of stamina either
reading or writing. During these station times, my students used DISCUS
for many reasons, but most of them loved TumbleBooks.
TumbleBooks is an online
book library that provides access to over 1,000 books for students in grades
K-6. Even the youngest readers can enjoy hours of storytime on this vast
website. Along the top of the webpage, students can explore storybooks, read-alongs, Ebooks, graphic novels, non-fiction, National Geographic videos, math
stories, resources in Spanish, playlists, and puzzles and games. In addition,
users can search by title, grade level, and/or subject, making TumbleBooks an
easy-to-use resource.
In the early childhood classroom, TumbleBooks
can be used during center time for read alouds that support the curriculum and
classroom lessons. As students see the words being read aloud, they are learning to decode words and
read more fluently.
As students become stronger readers, they can
read chapter books online through the E-Books tab. This allows students to have
access to a plethora of books that may not otherwise be available in their
classroom library. Not only does this help build stamina and fluency, this also
fosters a love of reading.
TumbleBooks is not only
a great tool for reading teachers and librarians, it also provides a variety of
resources for other content areas such as social studies and science. There are
many non-fiction titles for all ages as well as wonderful National Geographic
videos that support South Carolina standards and curriculum.
TumbleBooks is just one
resource that you can find on SC DISCUS. This tool offers an abundance of
additional websites that are valuable to any classroom teacher or librarian.
Sites such as BrainPOP (Jr.), Britannica Learning Zone, Learn 360, Explora for Elementary
Schools, Magic School Bus, and NoveList K-8 Plus can provide opportunities for
learning not otherwise possible.
